Full Time/Remote

First is fundamentally changing the real estate industry.  We believe that operational excellence will be key to our success and will be driven by constant improvement as well as bold game changing innovations.

As one of our early engineers, you’ll help guide key design, architecture, and technology decisions. You will be a part of our platform team, helping us to build a platform to support our customer-facing and internal applications. You will help us to scale the system to meet the needs of our expanding userbase. This includes driving the product roadmap, bringing “design thinking” on product features, coordinating development efforts across the team, and working with the front-end team to ensure that our efforts are aligned.

What you bring to the table

* 5+ years of developing Rails applications in production :

* SQL and relational database experience (not just using a database through an ORM)

* Experience in building APIs (REST at least, GraphQL a plus)

* Familiarity with software architecture principles

* Passion for startups and building products that will be used to change the face of real estate

* Generalist mindset, excited to jump into many parts of the stack to ship working software

* You can develop features without hand-holding in Rails, diving down into the database level as needed

* Clear, effective communication skills, both written and verbal

* Experience with agile practices, including TDD/BDD, continuous delivery, object oriented design, etc

* Comfort with asynchronous development: pull requests, chat, email, etc

Extra bonus points for

* Sidekiq (or another background job system integrated with Rails)

* GraphQL experience

* DevOps skills (Ansible and/or AWS cloud a plus)

* Front-end experience (especially React)

* Mobile development experience

* Proficiency in GitHub flow

* Experience with pair programming (remote or in-person)

* Open source contributions, side projects and gems (edited)

Director – Software Engineering

KEY – We will only view candidates with documented Ruby on Rails AND AWS experience (and experience managing teams delivering SaaS products).

Note 9/29: They must have coded in RoR. They will not be expected to be a hands on coder, but it’s always good to be able to “walk the walk”, and they may be involved in code reviews, etc., especially as we build out the team. I don’t think it’s critical that they’ve managed teams who’ve developed in RoR (although it would be nice), but they must have managed teams who’ve delivered commercial SaaS products. AWS is the other must have.

The Director, Software Engineering is responsible for delivering a broad set of products and services according to the strategic roadmap of Procare's common platforms. This is a highly technical role that also requires strong leadership skills and business understanding.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure delivery of products and services on Procare's strategic roadmap, including web applications and services, mobile apps, and back office systems and integrations
  • Define and implement common architectures, platforms, and technologies in collaboration with CTO and other technology leaders
  • Oversee the day-to-day technical and architectural standards, providing guidance to engineers at all levels
  • Collaborate with product management and other business stakeholders on defining product roadmap and roadmap requirements
  • Mature, evolve, and implement software engineering practices, such as agile/Kanban methodology, design standards, coding standards, peer reviews, testing, etc.
  • Define and implement DevOps practices for production/operations
  • Manage and optimize a hybrid team of onshore/local and remote/offshore resources, with a balance of productivity, flexibility, and cost
  • Measure and report on productivity and quality of teams and progress of initiatives on roadmap
  • Lead, mentor, and manage individual technical contricutors and managers/team leads
  • Occasional domestic travel to meet with other development and functional teams (10-15%)
  •

  •

Requirements

  • Experience managing development teams with multiple manager-level and individual contributor direct reports
  • Experience managing delivery of commercial SaaS solutions with small to medium sized teams (10-20 people)
  • Highly technical background, must have significant current hands-on experience with the relevant technologies listed below
  • Experience with AWS and building cloud-native products and services, including ElastiCache, Lambda/serverless, RDS/Aurora, Route53, CloudFront
  • Hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails and React required, as well as with other platforms (C#, Java, LAMP, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with various relational database platforms, PostgreSQL preferred
  • Experience with continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) in a DevOps working model
  • Experience with formal IT Service Management based on ITIL standards preferred
  • Experience with structured/formal Agile development processes, Kanban preferred
  • Experience with the Atlassian suite of products – Jira Software, Confluence, BitBucket, etc.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field (Master’s degree preferred), or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience as a software engineer/architect
  • Minimum three years’ experience managing software engineering teams delivering commercial SaaS products/services
