Based on Jason's conversation with Mike Watson:  The coding tests are given as a “think while you code” exercise:

  1. Do they follow direction; don’t go rouge and try to make it more than what is being asked for.
  2. Do they use logic when coding? No overkill – keep it short sweet and to the point
  3. Don’t move to fast and miss small details
  4. How well do they document – no misspelled words etc.
  5. Is their code clean (not messy), clear and easy to follow?

– Google Docs Interview -write a program language and don't need assistance from an IDE (small algorithm outside of an IDE) 
– Write code, not a full program that compiles (it doesn't have to be perfect).  
– Walk through function calls and explain what you are doing (not just throwing code at it)
– String manipulation
– Show that you understand algorithms



These are the things that they look for in every candidate.

Interview Prep:  Not a guarantee they will ask these questions, but most of our candidate's have been asked a form of the following, so prepare accordingly:

  • Problem presented: A binary tree problem. 
  • Problem presented: Sudoku, how would a computer do it. 
  • Problem preseneted: scheduling problem with start and end times out of order and you had to write code that would go through them and report meeting conflicts.
  • Problem: Programming a card shuffler
  • RESUME KNOWLEDGE:  they will go through your resume.  If you claim to be a SME, they will take you down that line of questioning.  If you are junior, they will treat you in kind. 
  • Problem, Ian will show an arbitrary graph of nodes in different colors and then give constraints or a word problem on how to find the longest color string. 

From a person who worked at Spectra and then interviewed for the SDET role:
And if it helps you prep a candidate, I remember getting the following board problems:

1) determine if tree a is a sub-tree of tree b.

2) given a tree with possible keys of 1 through 100, determine which keys are not in the tree (or which ones that are).

3) given n, determine the Fibonacci sequence to the nth place.

***As far as what the hiring manager is looking for, first and foremost, someone who has 2-5 years of software development experience and a Computer Science or Computer Engineering Degree.

Second, if they have any test experience, that’s a plus.

***Dave and Ian ask typical code interview questions. Usually a developer that has a reasonable level of experience can do satisfactorily on the questions. Typically when someone doesn’t make the bar, they have done coding which should show in the interview, but their programming isn’t strong/deep or problem solving isn’t strong. Weak programming shows up if they can do the basics syntactically, but haven’t done difficult programming. Problem solving can’t be ascertained from the resume.
